Dr Saminathan Suresh Nathan is an orthopaedic surgeon practising at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore. He specialises in treating bone and soft tissue tumours of the musculoskeletal system and in joint replacement or adult reconstruction surgery, such as bone transplants and custom implants in revision joint surgery.
Dr Nathan completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1992 and trained in orthopaedic surgery at the National University Hospital (NUH). He then obtained his Master of Medicine in surgery and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK.
Dr Nathan trained at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York, USA from 2003 – 2005 as a musculoskeletal oncologist. He gained advanced techniques in adult reconstruction to restore function to defects secondary to tumour removals and in difficult situations resulting from revision arthroplasty surgery. Dr Nathan also worked at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore Medical Centre in the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the Sloan-Kettering Institute in New York, USA on osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer.
Dr Nathan was formerly the clinical director, head of the Musculoskeletal Oncology Division and senior consultant in joint replacement surgery at NUH. He is the leader of the Musculoskeletal Oncology and Sarcoma Group of the National University Cancer Institute of Singapore (NCIS). He is also the principal investigator at the Musculoskeletal Oncology Research Laboratory in the NUS Clinical Research Centre.
He serves as 1 of only 3 established senior orthopaedic surgeons on the Domain Specific Review Board (DSRB) that determines the ethics of research at the National Healthcare Group and National University Health System of the Ministry of Health, Singapore.
Dr Nathan served as the chairman of the Clinical Competency Committee. In 2007, he was 1 of the only 2 members from Singapore inducted to the International Symposium of Limb Salvage Surgeons. In 2008, he was the only member from Singapore elected to the advisory committee of the Asia-Pacific Musculoskeletal Tumour Society, and was the president of the society from 2014 –2016. He also provides consultancy to 2 joint replacement companies as a joint replacement specialist.
Dr Nathan has been actively contributing to the American Orthopaedic Research Society and has been cited in 'Marquis Who's Who', a publication recognising individuals of distinction in their respective fields.
Dr Nathan has attained tenure as an associate professor in orthopaedic surgery at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine in NUS since 2006. He has published more than 100 research articles in renowned journals and chapters in important surgical textbooks.
